ORISHA SONG SERIES
Learn the devotional songs brought over to the Caribbean by the Yoruba people of West Africa.
Jadele McPhereson is a great interpreter and teacher of this music in Chicago.
She will introduce the history, proper musical context, and the deities of this powerful music.
10/15-12/3 Mondays 7pm
$20 a class or $130 for 8 week session


MOROCCAN TRANCE POLYRYTHMS
This music is used in rituals of spiritual healing, marriages, and other ceremonies. Quintin Shaw
and Heather McQueen travel to morocco frequently, keeping a strong connection to the roots
while allowing the music to flourish and evolve in Chicago. They will introduce you to the music of the Aissaoua, Toktooka Jebelia, and Gnawoua, and instruments such as the Tabl (double-headed drums), Bendir (frame drums often with cymbals), Tarija (small goblet drums), Tibla (kettledrums) and Tasa (metal dish).
1st and 3rd Saturdays at 2pm, Oct thru Dec

Take private lessons on Conga, Djembe, Darbooka, Rhythmic Structure, and more with one of our instructors.

BOMBAZO
Learn about the natural environment and protocol of the Bomba tradition of Puerto Rico. Tito Rodriguez the renowned director of Africaribe will teach some songs and rhythms, and will explain the interaction between drummer and dancer.

BOMBA PRIMO
This workshop focuses on the art of drumming for a dancer. Learn musical phrases from the Bomba vocabulary and how to capture the dancers movements. Taught by Tito Rodriguez.

CUMBIA
The folkloric style of cumbia contains a rich texture of sounds and rhythms that has been lost by it's commercial successor. Leo Suarez, musical director of Tierra Colombiana will introduce the different parts and instruments of cumbia such as the Tambora, Alegre, and Maracas.

FOLKLOR COLOMBIANO   
This is an introduction to a few folkloric styles of Colombia such as the Mapale and San Lucas. Learn the proper technique for playing the Tambora, Alegre, and Llamador. Taught by Leo Suarez.

DARBOOKA
Learn about the history of this popular instrument. Quintin Shaw will show proper technique and teach the different styles such as Arabic, Iraqi, Turkish, and Egyptian.

BANDIR
Learn to play the frame drum, one of the oldest instrumentrs. Quintin Shaw will focus on the Moroccan and Algerian styles and techniques.

DOMINICAN SALVE
The Dominican version of the old Regina style of Sacred chants is infused with African rhythms and call and response style singing. Songs have been dedicated to deities of the West African pantheons and instruments such as panderetas(tambourines), guira, and balsie (friction drum) are used. Taught by Charly Barbera

RUMBA
Introduction to Cuban Rumba. Learn the history and parts to Guaguanco, Columbia, and Yambu. Charlie Hart is a founding member of Okokan and is renowned for performing devotional Cuban music at Toques and ceremonies.
